What is the Student Academy of Excellence (SAE) Secondary Schools Initiative?

The Secondary Schools Initiative is an early entry membership to the Student Academy of Excellence for high-achieving secondary students from Griffith University Partner Schools. Members have access to mentoring, workshops and experiences designed to enhance and expand their achievements. Focusing on excellence in academics, leadership and personal achievement, the Student Academy of Excellence (SAE) encourages and guides undergraduate students to reach their full potential to help give them the edge over their peers.

You will be offered opportunities to develop and enhance your academic and communication skills, meet like-minded students from other schools, and work on your goals for both study and career. You will have regular online access to mentoring with active SAE undergraduate members.

Will we get access to the library and resources within it for our secondary school studies?

Will this program help me in any way towards my school subjects?

How will collaborating with students across any subject area or discipline be of benefit to me?

Does the Student Academy of Excellence Schools Initiative membership increase my chances of getting into university?

How does the mentoring work?

Mentoring is an integral part of the Student Academy of Excellence Schools Initiative and is predominantly delivered online after school hours. Online drop-in sessions are offered by the mentors two-three times per week. You may also book one-on-one online meetings with a mentor to talk about things like assignment work, goal setting or study skills strategies. Mentors deliver online workshops approximately once per term on specific topics. At our in-person events, you will have opportunities to connect with our mentors.

Are mentors available for 24/7 assistance?

If I were to feel unsafe during a mentoring session or during an event conducted by the Student Academy of Excellence, what should I do and how would the situation be handled?

What opportunities are offered to Schools Initiative members?

Membership to the Student Academy of Excellence provides opportunities and experiences that help students reach their full potential and paves the way to a promising future. These include in-person events, workshops and webinars on topics that matter during your final years of secondary school.

Do the Student Academy of Excellence Secondary Schools Initiative members have the opportunity to volunteer or study overseas?

Will there be opportunities to visit the campuses?

If I become a member, what will my commitment be?

We know how busy the final years of secondary school are, so we have developed this Initiative in a way that enables you to engage in as much or as little as your time allows. In-person events and online workshops are not compulsory although there is an expectation that you would engage in some way throughout the year.

Does the Student Academy of Excellence Schools Initiative have high expectations?

How will being a part of the Schools Initiative affect my family life, extra-curricular schedule, and schoolwork?

Are all meetings, events, and workshops compulsory or can they be adjusted or missed due to changes in my plans or commitments?

How do I become a member?

You may be invited by your school to apply for membership in Year 10 and/or in Year 11. Year 11 members have the opportunity to continue throughout Year 12.

To be considered for membership, students must:

  • be nominated by their school
  • maintain high academic achievement
  • demonstrate a desire and commitment to embrace the opportunities provided.

Schools that have an existing relationship with Griffith University are given the opportunity to nominate students for membership each year. For more information, email sae@griffith.edu.au
